THE JUNGLE WARRIOR WORKOUT PROGRAM

THE JUNGLE WARRIOR® WORKOUT

The Jungle Warrior® workout was a training regime I developed during the course of my one year Law School programme at the Nigerian Law School (Kano Campus).

The Kano campus of the Nigerian Law School is situated on the site of the former Bagauda Lake Hotel; located in Bagauda, a picturesque, heavily wooded area on the outskirts of Kano State. Highly secluded, the Law school campus was the perfect environment for an individual desirous of immersing himself in study.

The Law School, as you may very well know is a stress filed environment. Lectures commenced by 9am and ended by 1:30 pm with a small break in between. Private study taking up a larger part of the remainder of the day, with students attempting to keep up with the heavy work load imposed upon us by our lecturers and taskmasters. As aresult, the average law school student spends an average of 10 - 15 hours daily involved in academic activity with little time for, and less inclination towards exercise.

My diet while in the Kano Campus, consisted mainly of carbohydrates like rice, eba, amala, pounded yam, with the occasional beans (don't get me started on the junk food).  Nutrition was not a priority to many of us, especially as Bar Finals drew closer with each passing minute.

The campus did not have a gymnasium, or any training equipment. Suffice to say, the environment was terrible for a bodybuilder, or the health enthusiast, for that matter. I needed a training programme, which could fit into the little time i had in the early mornings, and also utilized the opportunities presented by the environment.

The climate in Kano varied according to the seasons. There was the bone chilling cold of the Harmattan season, borne upon the wings of the desert winds, and worsened by the expansive foliage encompassing the campus and its environs. There was a period when the weather alternated between very hot days, and very cold nights, like a confused woman. This later transmuted to the searing blaze which covered the months between February and July; a more benevolent sun took over briefly before the incessant rains of August to October. The sun rose as early as 4:30am sometimes, the heat quickly increasing in intensity, such that it became difficult to move by 9 am. Any training programme had to fit the short window between 5am and 7am.

After undertaking an analysis of the environment, I noticed that a 2 km long asphalt road encompassed the campus. I also discovered a largely disused open air amphitheatre, a part of which I promptly converted to a "jungle gym" using as equipment much of the debris created as a result of the ravages of Time upon the concrete chairs and other structures in the amphitheatre.

I soon developed a total body fitness programme based on the environment, which i christened the "Jungle Warrior Workout". This programme was derived from  a synthesis of the programme used to train Gerald Butler and the cast of '300'; the US Navy SEAL workout, the 'Urban Warrior' workout, and martial arts training . As modified, it may be used by the busy executive, as well as the professional athlete, in short, any one. the programme goes as follows.

Monday- Friday, (excluding Thursdays )

2km run
100 pushups (different variations incline, decline, flat, diamond, T pushups, one arm)
50 situps/ abdominal crunches
50 - 100 squats
50 mule kicks (for the hamstrings and hip flexors)
25 box jumps (later increased to 50)
50 tricep dips
50 rows per arm (I used a broken concrete chair as a weight)
50 bicep curls (I used a broken piece of pavement as a weight)
(the programme should be done one immediately after the other, and completed within 45 mins)

Saturday

I generally doubled my quota on the above in addition to 1 hour martial arts training divided into the following:

15 minutes capoeira ginga, (alternately Karate, Eskrima, Silat, or Taekwondo  katas may be employed; if you’re not martial arts inclined, just run on a spot).
100 kicks (different variations)
100 hand strikes (works for the biceps)
It goes without saying that this regime requires a tremendous amount of self discipline to successfully accomplish. However by Bar finals, I was in supreme physical condition, while several others were breaking down healthwise.

As a result, I recommend this programme for any person with the courage and sufficient desire to achieve ultimate fitness. However, caution must be exercised in order to prevent serious injury.
